Ten Hypnosis Myths
There are a lot of popular myths about hypnosis, many of which have come from a misunderstanding of the process, from dramatic literature or films, or from the 'air of mystery' that stage hypnotists tend to cultivate.
I've highlighted some of those myths below.
MYTH 1 - Hypnosis is like being asleep
Hypnosis is very different from sleep, as you will be aware of your surroundings while in trance. Many people find that through hypnosis they become more aware of smells, sounds, and feelings than usual.
MYTH 2 - The hypnotist can make you do things against your will.
This is completely untrue. If the hypnotist were to make
a
suggestion that you did not want to follow, you could easily ignore it.
Hypnosis is a process that requires an atmosphere of trust.
MYTH 3 - You won't remember what happened while you were hypnotised.
Most people remember what has taken place while they
were in
trance, with the obvious exception being that they have accepted a
suggestion to remember nothing that took place.
MYTH 4 - Only a certain type of person can be a hypnotist
A
complete myth. Virtually anyone can learn hypnosis easily with the
correct training. We take people from beginner to advanced level in just 2 days - and far beyond advanced hypnosis.
MYTH 5 - Hypnosis is a 'magical power'
There
is nothing inherently magical about hypnosis - this is just an
impression cultivated by stage hypnotists and magicians. Real hypnosis
might seems magical as most people are completely unaware of the
structure and the skills behind it.
MYTH 6 - You can 'get stuck' in a hypnotic trance
Totally
untrue. Hypnotic trance is just a state of mind - a 'daydream' kind of
state. If you were left in a trance, you would either move back into
your normal everyday state of mind, or drift into sleep and wake
naturally later.
MYTH 7 - Only weak-willed people can be hypnotised
Anyone can be hypnotised. Your ability to access the
trance state depends on practice, not will power.
MYTH 8 - You will go into trance if you look a hypnotist in the eye.
There
is nothing special or hypnotic about eye contact, though this is a
widespread popular belief about hypnosis. I've even seen old hypnosis
books where a black square was placed over the hypnotist's eyes in the
photographs!
MYTH 9 - Hypnosis is 'play acting' and totally fake.
Hypnosis
is quite a real phenomenon, which can create powerful and lasting
positive change. For example, recent research has shown that
hypnotherapy is one of the most effective interventions for stopping
smoking.
MYTH 10 - When hypnotised, you have no control.
When
hypnotised, you are in complete control and can ignore any suggestions
that you do not wish to follow. You are completely aware throughout the
process and can open your eyes at any time.

ABOUT NLP
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) models the science and art of human thinking and behaviour, giving us a knowledge base that makes rapid and effective change possible.
NLP was originally created through modeling the language, behaviour and thought processes of outstanding individuals who consistently displayed excellence in their areas of expertise.
That process produced the patterns of
excellence which form the foundation of NLP.
